History of NBMC&H

Originally envisioned by Dr. B. C. Roy, North Bengal Medical College and Hospital was established in 1968 as the First Medical College of North Bengal. The planning was executed by Ajit Kumar Panja, the then state health minister. Prof. Ajit Kr. Duttagupta joined as the first official principal of the college which was then known as North Bengal University Medical College. NBUMC was rechristened in August 1978 to North Bengal Medical College & Hospital and the administrative control went from North Bengal University to Govt. of West Bengal.

The premedical classes started on 6.11.67 in a makeshift arrangement at Jackson Medical School, Jalpaiguri. 2nd to 6th batch of students undertook their premedical course at Raigunj University College. 7th batch onwards, the students started their premedical course at NBMC campus, Sushrutanagar, their own place. Classes for 1st year MBBS course for 1st batch started on 18.11.68 in NBU campus. MBBS classes started in Sushrutanagar, the present site of NBMC in 1972. The first 5 batches had to migrate to SSKM hospital for their clinical lessons after passing 2nd prof. First 2 batches completed internship and house-man ship there. The college got its recognition from the Medical Council of India in 1978, when the first batch of students got the coveted registration number.

North Bengal Medical College and Hospital located in the foot hills of the mighty Himalayas, is the nearest Medical College to Sandakphu, the place with highest altitude in whole West Bengal and from where best panoramic view of the Sleeping Buddha, the mighty Kanchenjunga can be cherished. The pollution free refreshment with lustrous greenery, with adjoining tea gardens and the unending Balason River Basin are some of its assets, which make this Medical College unique in all respect. Till date this is the Medical College with largest coverage area in whole West Bengal, which not only covers more than six districts, but also patients come from allied border regions of other three countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan. It is the Largest Healthcare Facility in the North Bengal region of West Bengal serving as a Tertiary Referral Institute and has teaching programs for both Graduation and Post-Graduation. It is one of the twelve Government Medical Colleges in West Bengal with a patient turn-over of more than thousand, with a patient occupancy rate of 137%.

North Bengal Medical College and Hospital is in Sushrutanagar, a sister township of Siliguri at District Darjeeling of West Bengal. Besides providing the tuition to the MBBS students, it is also enriched by its sister institutions like North Bengal Dental College and the College of Nursing in the same campus. Not only this, it also provides different paramedical courses run by the West Bengal Medical Council.

The college and hospital buildings, spread over a sprawling campus of 161 acres (0.65 km2), are connected by very long corridors which total a length of 2.6 km. The North Bengal Dental College and the Nursing Training College are also located in the same campus with a efficiently functioning Police Out Post.

Achievements

In the college section in 2004, the institute achieved the milestone to be reckoned as the Post-graduate institute with introduction of MD/MS courses in five specialised disciplines like Anatomy, Physiology, Community Medicine, Pathology and Anaesthesiology, which were recognized by the Medical Council of India in 2007.
Since then more postgraduate courses were added in the fields of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, General Medicine, Surgery, Gynae & Obstetrics, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology and ENT Diseases Recently permitted Postgraduate seats in the fields of Radiodiagnosis, Biochemistry and Psychiatry and will be added in near future.

In the Hospital Section Initiation of 24 Hours round the clock functioning of Central Lab. with abolition of date system with long delay. Initiation & full functioning of Emergency Observation Ward has been started after overcoming huge hurdles. Thalassemia Day Care Centre is running from 4th August 2017 and in full swing. New OPD Counter and Patient’s Waiting Shade construction by SJDA in process. Ensuring the starting of all OPD Counters sharp at 9:00 AM and achieving the target of RSBY. Special Trolley-puller engagement at OPDs and renovation of Labour Room in process.
Regularization of the functioning of Greenzenbio [company for bio-medical waste disposal] engaged in scavenging. Initiation and continuation of daily Removal of garbage, by JCB and the functioning of compactors. Assuring of Siliguri Municipal Corporation in sending vehicle for collection of garbage from vats of NBMCH on payment basis.
Ensuring parking of vehicles at Parking Lot and overall beautification involving MED, Divisional Forest Officer, SJDA, & Contractors of Vishwa Bangla. Procurement of Grant from NBDD & Forest Dept. for beautification. Discussion on the go, with NBDD for further Beautification, Water Purifier, Mechanized Laundry etc. and with Siliguri Municipal Corporation for establishing Compactor Station and One-Time Cleaning.
